A new model policy on drug testing for law enforcement officers and department employees has been developed under the auspices of the Advisory Board to the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) and the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) National Law Enforcement Policy Center.
Abstract
The model policy is intended to serve as a guide for the police executive who is interested in formulating a written procedure to govern drug testing. The model discusses the purpose of drug testing and defines specific terminology. Procedures and rules regarding possession of controlled substances on and off duty are outlined for applicants, probationary employees, and employees. Drug testing procedures and methodology are described, including handling of drug testing results.
