At some point in time, all organizations will have to confront Human immunodeficiency virus infection (HIV) among their staff.
Abstract
To prepare for the possibility of HIV in the workplace, it is suggested that managers are provided with adequate information and assistance to carry out their responsibilities appropriately, effectively, and humanely; that the staff is provided with sufficient knowledge to eliminate unwarranted fears; and that employees infected with HIV retain their civil rights. Suggestions for formulating a workplace policy regarding HIV positive persons are offered, and policy issues concerning employee rights, discrimination, confidentiality, and other critical topics as decided by the courts are discussed. A checklist of procedures for officers who sustain accidental exposure to communicable and infectious diseases is presented.
