This article describes a new concept in training for Chicago (Illinois) Police Department personnel called the Personnel Safety Seminar.
Abstract
The program trains 100 police officers weekly with the ultimate goal to train the entire 12,500-member police force. The seminar consists of a one-day training program covering such topics as seat safety belts, motor vehicle pursuits, soft body armor, and AIDS. The origins of this seminar can be traced to both Illinois State statute and the Municipal Code of Chicago, which legislated the mandatory use of seat safety belts. In order to obtain Federal funds, educational training and periodic reinforcement for seat belt use had to be offered. Upon recommendation of the Personnel Safety Committee, other areas of personnel safety were added. Members attending the seminar are encouraged to critique the program. Examination of the critiques to date has shown the program to have had a positive impact on those attending.
