This report presents a question-by-question tabulation of a survey sent to 200 jails housing a women's average daily population of over five persons.
Abstract
The first of three reports concerned with the administration of corrections for female offenders, this survey solicited information from jails selected from the American Correctional Association's National Jail and Adult Detention Directory, 1986-88. The selection included at least one jail from every State, with the number of jails from each State roughly proportional to each State's total population. This report tabulates all questions answered by enough respondents to make statistically valid conclusions. Approximately 20 percent of the questions could not be tabulated and reported because of an insufficient response rate. Questions covered physical characteristics of the jail facility; capacity and use; intake and orientation; funding, administration, and staffing; classification, security, and litigation; visiting and child care; health care services; inmate substance abuse; work assignments; and academic and vocational education. Appended list of States by region.
