The revised code is organized into chapters that are further subdivided into parts. Chapters pertain to general provisions; general offenses; offenses against persons; offenses against property; offenses against the family; offenses against the administration of government; and offenses against public health, safety, and welfare. The Criminal Sentencing Reform Act of 1989 and the classification of criminal offenses are the work of the commission's Sentencing Guidelines Subcommittee. The sentencing guidelines and the classification of criminal offenses take into account numerous considerations, including the nature and characteristics of the offense in relation to other offenses, the defendant's prior convictions, and the available resources and constitutional capacity of the Department of Correction. This report includes the offense-classification listings of the revised Criminal Code and a cost analysis for projected prisoner populations under the old and new sentencing structures.
