Group counseling processes and methods allow correctional personnel to intervene with offenders in a potentially effective way. When personnel are trained and encouraged to act as group leaders, an opportunity is presented to maximize the positive potential of client contacts. These personnel can be found in institutional settings for both juveniles and adults and also in community-based service facilities, schools, hospitals, and social service agencies. Group counseling represents an addition to other programs and services, not a substitute for them. Some of the administrative problems associated with initiating short-term group counseling programs involve scheduling, membership and staff leadership, conflicting demands, and other service needs. The evolution of group counseling is traced, and benefits of counseling are noted. Preparation for group counseling sessions is considered, with emphasis on communication and the physical setup. Conducting sessions is examined in terms of confidentiality, ways of stimulating and continuing discussion, and group reactions. Special methods and techniques of counseling are identified, including role playing and role reversal, taping sessions, and goal planning. Session closure, followup, and evaluation are also reviewed.
