The first part of the book covers essential qualities and skills that law enforcement supervisors and managers will need in the 1990's. The focus is on education, experience, energy, skills (public speaking, computer literacy, and writing), the importance of understanding an organization's culture, role expectations, the establishment of attainable goals, and resume writing. The second part of the book details proven techniques that help prepare for promotional examinations. Consideration is given to written examinations, oral interviews, oral resumes, and the assessment center process. Assessment centers combine traditional examination methods with group participation exercises and public speaking observations. It is concluded that career planning by law enforcement officials is essential in light of the growing influence of computers, fiscal conservatism, and increased community demands for police services. Appendixes contain a suggested reading list, sample resumes, and potential interview questions.
