A section on "understanding family violence" examines the dynamics of abusive relationships; data on the extent and sources of the problem, including wife abuse, child abuse, husband abuse, and elder abuse; factors that perpetuate the cycle of family violence; and myths and realities associated with family violence. Another section of the handbook discusses indicators to help identify abusers, including what they have in common and various types of abusers. A third section contains checklists to help correctional personnel identify what is needed to assist abusers, family members, and those who work with abusers. The resources required are differentiated by type of abuser and type of victim. The concluding section provides examples of what is available and what can be done in institutions and in the community to reduce family violence. A resource directory inside the back cover of the handbook lists referral sources and other information useful in dealing with family violence.
