Abstract
SEVERAL EXAMPLES OF EFFECTIVE POLICE WORK BY POLICEWOMEN IN INDIANAPOLIS, MIAMI, PEORIA, AND WASHINGTON, D.C. ARE CITED. THESE EXAMPLES INCLUDE POLICEWOMEN WORKING IN ROUTINE PATROL FUNCTION AS WELL AS HOMICIDE AND NARCOTICS INVESTIGATIONS. COMMENTS ARE MADE ON THE MORE WIDESPREAD USE OF POLICEWOMEN IN ENGLAND, ISRAEL, GERMANY AND SWEDEN. THE AUTHORS CITE INSTANCES IN MENTAL INSTITUTIONS, WHERE WOMEN PERSONNEL HAVE GENERALLY HAD A CALMING EFFECT IN VIOLENT SITUATIONS, TO DISPROVE THE ASSUMPTION THAT WOMEN WILL NOT MAKE GOOD POLICE OFFICERS BECAUSE OF THE VIOLENCE INVOLVED. THE AUTHORS STATE THAT INCREASED USE OF WOMEN IN THE POLICE DEPARTMENT CAN INCREASE A DEPARTMENT'S CRIME FIGHTING CAPABILITY, IMPROVE THE IMAGE OF THE POLICE, REDUCE INCIDENCES OF VIOLENCE BETWEEN CITIZENS AND POLICE OFFICERS, AND BRING MORE MINORITIES ONTO THE POLICE FORCE.
