Standards promulgated by the American Correctional Association are intended to improve correctional programs in local detention facilities for adults and to provide a national framework for presenting the needs and concerns of correctional institutions to public officials, correctional administrators, legislators, funding agencies, and the public.
Abstract
The standards set high levels of compliance for facilities seeking to upgrade their services, programs, and overall operations. The accreditation process embodied in the standards facilitates public accountability through independent performance verification. The standards provide correctional administrators with an opportunity to develop a planned program for upgrading facilities and practices in accordance with nationally recognized goals. They cover correctional organization and management, inmate records, the physical plant, safety and emergency procedures, security and control, special management inmates, food service, sanitation and hygiene, health care, inmate rights, inmate rules and discipline, mail, admission and release, and inmate work programs. Supplemental information on the standards is appended, and a glossary and an index are provided.
