Since its founding in 1973 the Australian Institute of Criminology has conducted extensive research on corrections in Australia as well as on other criminal justice topics.
Abstract
Since 1976 it has published monthly statistics on the numbers of inmates. It also publishes national probation and parole statistics, which will soon be changed to community corrections statistics. Other bulletins focus on incarcerated juveniles and on prison statistics in other Asian and Pacific nations. An annual census that gathered data on 28 inmate characteristics began in 1982. The censuses have revealed a gross overrepresentation of Aborigines in all Australian prison systems and a lower use of community-based sentencing for them. Variations among jurisdictions have also been found. The census findings have prompted specific research projects on prison population projection, pretrial detention, inmate deaths, and prison overcrowding. Other research has focused on recidivism.
