This study is a comparison of beliefs concerning problem and non-problem drinking Irish-American college students.
Abstract
Thirty-five undergraduates participated in this experiment, 14 females and 21 males. At least one parent of these students was Irish. All subjects responded to questions dealing with alcohol-related beliefs. These beliefs possessed some cultural, social and/or generational stereotypes with regard to alcohol or alcoholics. Findings suggest that differences exist between problem and non-problem drinkers. Problem drinkers adhered more strongly to beliefs which might cause problem drinking. A better understanding of this relationship may be important in future effective intervention and preventive programs. 1 table and 9 references. (Author abstract modified)
