The policy goals of sentencing, as determined by the U.S. Congress, are discussed, along with classifications of authorized sentences and ancillary sanctions such as criminal forfeitures, restitution, and notice to victims. Definitions for specific criminal terms are established and specific sentencing procedures are outlined, with emphasis on presentence reports, imposition of sentences, correction of sentence on appeal, stay of execution of a sentence, and appeals against a sentence. Miscellaneous technical amendments and repealers are also discussed, including Rule 32 amendments (Sentence and Judgments), rules of procedure for the trial of misdemeanors before United States magistrates, and admissibility of convicted aliens into the United States.
