This consensus statement on workplace drug policies, strategies, and procedures was developed at a 1986 meeting sponsored by the National Institute of Drug Abuse and attended by representatives of business, industry, and labor.
Abstract
The procedure used to develop consensus involved five steps: 1) addresses by experts on specific issues related to drug program development and implementation, 2) the formation of consensus panels, 3) a draft of overall consensus statements, 4) a report on the consensus statement at a plenary session, and 5) revision of the consensus statements based on discussions at the plenary session. The statements covered general issues related to workplace drug abuse, health and safety issues, legal and security concerns, human relations issues, recommended areas for future research, and recommended areas for legislative action. Ethical and legal issues related to drug testing are emphasized.
