Campus crimes are on the rise, including rapes, shootings, fraud in student aid programs, grade tampering through the computer, embezzlement, and sexual harassment. College and university administrators are frustrated by the requirements of maintaining a secure campus on the one hand and retaining the academic traditions of free movement, access, and social interchange on the other. In surveying virtually all aspects of crime in American colleges and universities, the author examines several hundred court cases, many of which have set legal precedents. These cases are analyzed, categorized, and interpreted for the nonlawyer, and represent such issues as human sexuality and crime, search and seizure, confessions, fraud, theft, vandalism, alcohol, drugs, civil liability, and help for crime victims. The author also looks at criminal activities by intruders from off campus, as well as by students, faculty, administrators, and staff. Practical suggestions are offered for developing successful administrative strategies to prevent or reduce crime and for handling the aftermath of crime when it does occur. The book additionally includes useful crime avoidance checklists, and campus security guidelines are appended. 405 references.
