Abstract
This study examined the relationship between agency size and investigative effectiveness. Bivariate analysis of national data has indicated a strong inverse relationship, but multivariate analysis of data from Maryland suggests that other variables are more important determinants of investigative success. These other variables include region within the State and the mix of crimes reported to the police. A tentative conclusion is that environmental variables have a greater effect than organizational variables on police agency investigative effectiveness. 24 references, 7 tables. (Author abstract)
