A small amount of these drugs spills over into the illicit channels in Yugoslavia, creating a domestic demand for the substances. Approximately 2,000 addicts are registered in urban medical treatment centers; experts estimate 10,000 people abuse narcotics. The Commission on Narcotic Drugs of the Federal Executive Council of Yugoslavia adopted a drug abuse control program which identifies action to be taken by different societal sectors concerned with drug problems. Drug abuse prevention is emphasized, primarily by involving health and social services, family, the school, the community, the work place, and other non-governmental organizations. The program also stresses the need for healthy youth activities, personality development during adolescence, and the "deglamorization" of drug abuse. Customs and law enforcement officials are intensifying their efforts against illegal drug trafficking by improving cooperation among national and international agencies, and enhancing technical capabilities. 2 references.
