It is essential that demand-reduction efforts must be addressed in order to ensure supply-reduction realizable goals. The initial intervention goal must be the limitation of harm to the individual and society. The primary goal is to reduce drug misuse within the community. A wide range of integrated approaches is essential for demand-reduction programs to be successful in contacting drug abusers, maintaining that contact, and assisting those individuals through treatment and social reintegration. This article summarizes the more common approaches to the treatment, rehabilitation, and social reintegration of drug dependent individuals. 26 references. (Author abstract modified)
