This report describes the data processing and statistical analysis procedures used to develop the information presented in the publication "Juvenile Court Statistics 1985," which describes the activities of the nation's courts that have juvenile jurisdiction.
Abstract
These data are located at the National Juvenile Court Data Archive, which collects, processes, and stores the statistical information compiled by courts on the delinquency, status offense, and dependency cases they handle. The content of the information varies from court to court and is related to the nature of each court's information system and the purpose of each data collection effort. The production of "Juvenile Court Statistics 1985" used three categories of data from the archive: 1) a total of 657,670 petitioned and nonpetitioned case records from more than 1,100 courts, which were combined into a common data set through conversion into the national record format; 2) aggregate statistics from courts with a unit of count consistent with the national record format; and 3) aggregate statistics from most other courts with a unit of count inconsistent with the national record format. These data were used to develop information on the volume and nature of formally processed delinquency and status offense cases, formally and informally processed cases, trends from 1984 to 1985, and overall court workloads. Discussions of statistical procedures and appendixes presenting examples from individual States, software used in the national estimation procedure, and related information.
