Zambia was requested to participate in a United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organizational (UNESCO) action on drug education in Africa. This included studies on drug abuse and on attitudes and reactions to abuse, and showed that a drug abuse problem was beginning to develop in Zambia. In 1971, new drug regulations were enacted to control certain drugs and to limit their importation and export. Still needed are other preventive efforts in educational programs and services geared toward early detection and intervention as well as a means for monitoring progress. The programs planned for Zambia should also form part of regional activities with neighboring countries. 15 references. (Author abstract modified)
