The Pompidou Group is a cooperative effort to combat drug abuse and illicit drug trafficking and has functioned at the Council of Europe since 1980 as a section of the Directorate of Economic and Social Affairs.
Abstract
Its special features make it the only organization of its kind in Europe that deals with all areas of drug control, including the work of police and customs authorities, as well as with work on prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, epidemiology, and research. The Group also deals with fellowship programs. It uses a multidisciplinary approach to drug problems to enable European government officials to exchange views and information on measures to combat drug abuse and drug trafficking and to propose and discuss new action at the national or international level. The Pompidou Group meets at the ministerial level every 2 years and has special meetings at other times. (Author abstract modified)
