The Narcotics Laboratory Section of the Division of Narcotic Drugs of the United Nations Secretariat was established in 1954 and has conducted activities based on the recommendations of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs.
Abstract
The Section has conducted research on opium, cannabis, khat, and codeine. The Section currently provides training in drug identification techniques to scientists, mainly from developing countries. In addition, it develops training standards and conducts efforts to strengthen national narcotics laboratories in developing countries, through the procurement of basic laboratory equipment and other activities. Moreover, it is conducting efforts to develop standard testing methods applicable in developing countries, providing reference samples for analytical and research purposes, providing scientific and technical information on drugs of abuse, and collaborating with national narcotics laboratories.
