Cocaine trafficking is carried out by groups with great financial resources and transportation systems. Cocaine traffickers also engage in violent criminal and subversive activities. The United States government has made the suppression of cocaine one of its highest priorities. The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is working with law enforcement agents from concerned countries to eradicate coca plants and to exchange cocaine suppression intelligence information. Domestically, the U.S. Department of Justice has established law enforcement coordinating councils throughout the United States to coordinate criminal investigations and to ensure the appropriate use of prosecutorial resources. Federal, State, and local government agencies are working together to fight drug trafficking and abuse. The DEA has developed a program to deprive illegal drug manufacturers of the chemicals and precursors they need to make illicit drugs. Battling cocaine abuse in the United States must be carried out on several fronts. (Author abstract modified)
