This study, using data obtained from a supplement to the National Health Interview Survey conducted in 1987 and 1988, finds that older, non-white respondents with grade school educations exhibited little knowledge of AIDS and how it is transmitted.
Abstract
The survey reached 17,696 respondents over the age of 18, 2950 of whom were non-white and 2484 of whom were black. The study found that the higher a respondent's education level, the greater his or her knowledge of AIDS. However, non-whites demonstrated less knowledge of AIDS at all educational levels. As the age of the respondents increased, their knowledge of AIDS decreased. Those over 40 appeared to have, on average, less knowledge of AIDS than did younger respondents. The study argues that information on AIDS prevention should be especially provided to non-whites with little formal education. 2 footnotes.
