Information also came from a literature review, from a survey of State departments of corrections, and from site visits of seven institutions using technologically advanced equipment. Findings showed that the technologies used include perimeter security systems, locking systems, electronic fire detection and suppression systems, communications equipment, internal security equipment, internal surveillance equipment, management information systems, and new technologies. Results indicated that the impact of the technologies has been generally positive, but changes have been incremental rather than dramatic. Findings also indicated the need for careful planning, adaptation of technological systems to the correctional environment, and realistic expectations. 6 references.
