This article describes a model peer leader program, developed in Schenectady, New York that trains high school students to act as role models and facilitators for high risk elementary and junior high school students.
Abstract
The program, a credit-bearing high school course, requires that peer leaders define their own values and goals before attempting to help others. Peer leaders then work with fourth, fifth, and sixth graders and their parents in the development of healthy attitudes and effective coping skills. Program evaluations indicate that peer leaders aid in developing anti-drug attitudes and behavior among younger students and their parents. 9 references.
