Crime analysis enhances policy decisions, resource allocation, the selection of countermeasures, and the development of training objectives for crime prevention. The private sector is interested in crime analysis because such analysis promotes employee and consumer safety, corporate reputation, and profits. Computer-assisted crime analysis is the ideal methodology; pending access to computers, the crime prevention practitioner can design a manual format that is suitable for later computer conversion. Once a data base format has been determined and inspected for accuracy, the foundation exists for countermeasures design that is specific to a particular business loss situation. Training is then critical to communicate corporate policies and procedures, and should cover who commits robberies and when and how robberies occur. Several cases, including embezzlement, are presented to illustrate crime analysis tracking and countermeasures and the methods employees use to defraud their companies. The development of crime prevention systems is discussed, with emphasis on crime prevention through environmental design and target-hardening security systems to increase the risk for would-be criminals. 36 references.
