Better design is needed for law enforcement structures such as police stations, courtrooms, and jails and prisons. As a result of this demand, the Construction Information Exchange has been initiated to share information with architects and builders, as well as correctional officials on new research or studies of developments in criminal justice. The ideal solution is to build a place to live and work whose design, materials, and products enhance public safety and ease public fears. Fast, safe, and affordable solutions to the lack of prison and jail space are important. However, where financing prison construction used to be a major issue, siting is now a major obstacle. Another major design challenge is retrofitting older prison structures to increase capacity, surveillance, and control.
