Women are now being imprisoned in New Zealand for more serious and violent offenses, and their number is approaching the maximum capacity of the women's prisons.
Abstract
This report examines data on the numbers and characteristics of female prisoners, the seriousness of their offenses, the severity of their sentences and the proportions actually served in quarter year periods from 1982 to 1988. Results show that female prison muster reached a low in 1986, attributable to the implementation of the Criminal Justice Act of 1985, but since then has increased and is expected to continue increasing. 13 tables, 9 figures, 3 appendixes.
