This report describes the inmate education programs provided in Alaska and education programs offered in Federal prisons.
Abstract
It also lists examples of outstanding prison education programs in other States and summarizes the history of inmate education in Alaska and the contribution of the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) to the education of Native American inmates in Alaska's prisons. Education in Alaska prisons includes Adult Basic Education and General Equivalency Diploma programs, life skills training, vocational education, postsecondary education, and practical work assignments. A 1983 settlement agreement requires the provision of college-level degree programs to inmates. BIA funding is available only to fulfill needs that are unmet after all other funding sources have been exhausted. The Federal Bureau of Prisons have combined traditional education programs, vocational education, and prison industries programs. Footnotes and attached background information.
