The Texas Narcotics Control Program was created in December 1987. In implementing the program, the Texas Department of Public Safety employs 189 narcotics control officers. The program also funds 59 law enforcement support personnel, 17 assistant district attorneys, and 3 judges dedicated to drug apprehension and adjudication. The CJD has developed multiagency crime prevention projects to link law enforcement, prosecution, courts, probation, parole, and other criminal justice agencies. The goal is a unified strategy to suppress certain index crimes in high priority target areas. The CJD provides technical assistance to solve problems facing the State criminal justice system; such assistance has focused on prison and jail population dynamics and on the analysis of crime in Texas. Strategies funded or implemented by the CJD to fight crime encompass community relations and citizen involvement, victim assistance, child abuse prevention and intervention, law enforcement training and education, organized crime control, alternative programs for juveniles, purchase of juvenile services, juvenile correctional programs for serious and repeat offenders, community-based alternatives, correctional detention programs, and the regional coordination of criminal justice programs. Twelve exemplary projects funded by the CJD are detailed, and statistical data on CJD activities are provided. An appendix lists grants by program area for 1987 and 1988. Tables and figures.
