The University of Ottawa Protection Service, established in 1969 as an inhouse campus security service, has responsibilities that encompass security, parking and traffic, investigations, and fire prevention.
Abstract
The director of protection supervises 44 employees and administers an annual budget of $4.5 million. Before being hired, an officer must complete a 2-year law and security program of study at a recognized community college. Officers receive on-the-job training through seminars and conference. Fluency in both English and French is required for officers serving this bilingual student body. Officers are unarmed and keep a low profile. An officer in the main control room in the physical plant building can survey the entire campus through a system of television cameras posted at strategic points. The duty officer is alerted to any intrusion through a computerized alarm system. Every incident is recorded in a computer data bank. The service was the first in Canada to join the Crime Stoppers program. Activities of the service have included workplace health and safety, including radiation and bio-hazard safety, and the protection of visiting dignitaries.
