Since behavior change depends on situational influences, prevention specialists have turned their attention to reducing the risk of alcohol-impaired driving through modification of the drinking environment.
Abstract
Half of those who drive while intoxicated have just frequented a place licensed to serve alcoholic beverages. Server intervention programs include employee training, and review and modification of management policies and operations. Concerns include how much training is necessary to accomplish program objectives and where the emphasis is needed. Although research and evaluation of server intervention is in its infancy, there is reason to believe that server intervention may reduce intoxification and and subsequent alcohol-impaired driving. With differing results, it is necessary to look at the specifics of the programs and their particular implementations. 16 references, 1 table, 1 figure.
