In the spring of 1989 the Minneapolis Department of Emergency Communications moved into a dramatic new underground facility that combines the nearly century-old architectural character of its building with modern electronic systems and work facilities for those who answer emergency 911 calls and provide police and fire radio dispatching for the city.
Abstract
The construction cost was $2.4 million. The electronic subsystems include a computer-aided dispatch system, an enhanced call processing system, computerized radio control consoles, and audio recording facilities. Other features of the facility include a two-level space for administrative and support functions, an operations center with space for 10 operators and 10 dispatchers, meeting and training space, a kitchen, a room for quiet breaks, an exercise room, an observation gallery for visitors, closed-circuit television and radio systems, and a redesigned area for police property and evidence.
