The Missouri Alcohol or Drug Related Traffic Offenders' Programs (ARTOP) are designed to reduce the subsequent frequency of alcohol-related traffic offenses by presenting information on the effects of alcohol on the body and on driving skills and by motivating students with a drinking problem to make contact with rehabilitative services in the community.
Abstract
ARTOP consists of ten hours of education plus time for individualized assessments when indicated. Each student must develop a personal plan of action. This curriculum guide discusses orientation of students and then presents information on drinking and driving -- the magnitude of the problem, DWI laws in Missouri, costs of a DWI, and alternatives to drinking and driving. The chapter on physiology of alcohol details various aspects of blood alcohol content, effects of alcohol on the body, and combination of substances. Alcohol abuse and dependency are described in terms of economic costs, patterns of abuse, genetic factors, effects of dependency on the family, and recovery resources. Appendixes include sample forms, program operations, and resource materials.
