This manual examines the impact of sexual molestation and disclosure on children and provides step-by-step guidelines for use by therapists in conducting a comprehensive group treatment program for both the victims and their nonoffending caretakers.
Abstract
The manual emphasizes the importance of treatment that not only helps the child recover from the many traumatic effects of sexual molestation but also enhances the development of age-appropriate skills. The group therapy decreases isolation, promotes improved social interaction, and provides an ideal setting in which to begin to address the various conflicts surrounding the molestation. The text details the actual interventions to be used and includes instructions for anticipating and responding therapeutically to expected resistances. The 10 modules of the structured curriculum present a variety of activities that help to assist children and adults to begin to identify and express their conflicts and feelings. Each module presents the purpose, objectives, therapeutic considerations, activities, and treatment challenges involved. Case examples and handouts that may be photocopied are included.
