Abstract
The research is directed to supporting four program goals: 1) increasing understanding of the problems associated with the use of alcohol and other drugs, 2) improving the quality and accessibility of treatment and rehabilitation services, 3) increasing the accessibility of effective prevention programs, and 4) increasing public awareness and knowledge. Individual research projects focus on patterns of alcohol and drug use and problems, control measures, factors that control the voluntary consumption of substances, the processes of addiction, and damage to vital organs. Other projects focus on treatment programs, the treatment needs of special groups, methods of diagnosis and assessment, sociobehavioral issues, education and training, and levels of public information and awareness.
