Abstract
From December 1988 to March 1989, phone interviews were conducted with AIDS education coordinators and other health education professionals in every State. Information was obtained on State policies, guidelines, and instructional materials. Information on State policies that require HIV/AIDS education for elementary and secondary students covers the source of the policy, the date of the action, content, and the context in which HIV/AIDS education is taught. Survey findings include recommendations of State education leaders and the State education agency regarding HIV/AIDS education. General health education requirements are provided, including those for family life and sex education. If HIV/AIDS education has been integrated into these requirements, this is described. The report specifies resources within the State education agency dedicated to HIV/AIDS education, including State funding and the number of staff members involved. An overview of State education agency activities encompasses teacher training, the development of instructional materials, activities that target at-risk youth, surveillance activities, and evaluation.
