This book for AIDS patients, their family, and friends provides practical information and advice pertinent to health, emotional, and relational problems and adjustments typically encountered by AIDS patients.
Abstract
After detailing the medical characteristics of AIDS, how it is and is not transmitted, opportunistic infections derived from AIDS, and testing for AIDS, the book discusses issues in facing and sharing test results and diagnosis. Practical advice addresses when to share the news about AIDS infection with the family and friends and aspects of mutual support and responsibility. A chapter provides guidance on balancing needs and sharing feelings. Subsequent chapters discuss family adjustments (changing roles, signs of relational deterioration, family rights, and children's needs); finding help when needed; and changes in mind and body, sexual practices, and dealing with "down" periods. The book concludes with discussions of work, including rights in the workplace, and life planning after AIDS infection. Glossary, resource list, 23 suggested readings, 20 medical references.
