These statistical data and narrative summaries describe bombings and other incidents involving explosives in the United States in 1987, as well as investigative and enforcement efforts by the United States Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF).
Abstract
Bombings of abortion clinics, together with other criminal bombings and international terrorism, continued to heighten the public awareness of the threat posed by explosives and were the top priority for investigative efforts. A substantial proportion of defendants who were prosecuted for the illicit use of explosives had prior felony convictions or arrest records, and many were involved in drug-related activity. To deal with the problem, ATF also conducted programs to provide technical training and investigative assistance both to ATF special agents and to State and local police officers. Tables, figures, photographs, maps, and discussions of individual cases are included.
