Based on a survey of grantmakers and practitioners conducted from November 1988 to February 1989, this analysis of foundation grants for alcohol and drug abuse funding addresses giving patterns by program focus, foundation type, geographic scope, type of support, population group, and recipient organization type.
Abstract
From 1983 to 1987, 337 funders issued 1,814 grants totaling $87 million. Although the share of overall foundation support for substance abuse programs continued to be limited, the share has grown significantly in the 1980's, from $4.36 million or 0.4 percent of overall foundation funding in 1980 to $26.36 million or 1 percent in 1987. Data indicate that concern over the malignant effects of substance abuse on health and social services has led to increased foundation activity. The analysis concludes that the most promising approach to the alcohol and drug abuse problem lies in collaboration and communication among foundations to determine what works best in prevention and treatment. Successful approaches deserve recognition and replication. There is need for a long-term commitment to continue funding until attitudes and behaviors change. 33 tables, 6 figures.
