Recent statutory changes in British rules of evidence and criminal procedure affecting partner violence are discussed, focusing on the need for communities to become aware of the seriousness of violence against women before criminalization of partner violence will help battered women.
Abstract
Changes in police policy affecting battered women in Britain, North America, and Australia are detailed, with emphasis on relevant statutes and cases. Studies of police response to domestic violence in selected police stations in London are reported, and the issue of spousal immunity in the United Kingdom is examined, along with such issues as compellability, prosecution policy, and sentencing. Law and policing policy should be focused so as to protect women from male violence in the family home.
