Trial lawyers as a group must break up the old boy network and demonstrate their concern for eliminating sexism and racism from the legal profession.
Abstract
Today most partners in law firms and most law school faculty members are still white males from middle or upper middle class backgrounds. Few female lawyers have been promoted to partnership, and there are few members of racial minorities as partners in law firms. Very few lawyers with physical handicaps or from diverse ethnic or economic backgrounds are partners either. Because trial lawyers represent the poor and oppressed, they must be particularly sensitive to the inequities in their profession. Trial lawyers must demonstrate that they are concerned about justice for all people. They must join with other lawyers to increase the numbers of women, minorities, and handicapped in the legal profession.
