This manual to assist in developing awareness among teachers and resource persons is a project of the Law-Related Education (LRE) National Training and Dissemination Program (NTDP), the objective of which is to institutionalize high-quality, delinquency prevention LRE in public and private schools nationwide.
Abstract
The national organizations in the NTDP promote LRE programs by working with State LRE leaders and education, justice, and civic groups to provide LRE awareness training, implement local and statewide staff development programs, and hold national leadership training seminars. The first section of the manual discusses the six characteristics of effective LRE programs found in a 1983 study sponsored by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. It also offers a rationale for why LRE should be part of school curricula and how it should be integrated. Planning an LRE awareness program, the second section, explains the difference between awareness sessions and staff development, offering suggestions for planning sessions. Assessing audiences, setting goals, designing the agenda, and using community resource persons are covered. The final section discusses considerations for training, outlines structured demonstration lesson plans, and suggests methods for teaching controversial issues. The appendixes contain facilitating materials, including transparency masters and three demonstration lessons. 6 footnotes, 2 references, 3 appendixes.
