This report recommends specific priorities for improving criminal justice information systems in New York State.
Abstract
As the result of strategic planning activities, eleven major State criminal justice agency automation projects requiring full and immediate fiscal and management support are identified. Additionally, policymakers need better information in two general categories: data needed to describe and data needed for drawing conclusions. Strategic planning for improving criminal justice information also includes examining major problems and their causes and effects, describing and ranking related goals, and developing and listing strategies to meet those goals. Of highest priority is improving the State's ability to follow cases and offenders through the criminal justice system, from their entry to the time they leave. Improved tracking will enable better assessment of the impacts of laws, policies, and programs. Appendix A summarizes the problem analysis that is the basis for the recommendations.
