The United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) initiated a project called FBI 2000 in 1988 to identify future conditions that might influence FBI policies and procedures over the next decade and might also affect law enforcement in general in the United States.
Abstract
The project used information from interviews with senior FBI executives as well as police officials and academicians from 13 States. The FBI executives identified the following nine issues as having the greatest potential impact on the FBI's future: budget, personnel, image, technology and science, international trends and activities, jurisdictional coordination, drug trends, training, and legislation. Interviews in the external community identified two additional issues relevant to law enforcement: the privatization of the police and personnel sharing through task forces among police agencies within and between nations. The discussions underscored the need for constant awareness of the FBI's internal and external environments to make adjustments to serve the public welfare. 2 references.
