A long term area of interest to educators has been the impact of college on the professional development of students. Although there have been studies that have focused on professional development during the college years, none have focused on the inmate population in a maximum security prison. The experience of the students in the program raises the question of whether certain offenders amenable to change would benefit from correctional education programs. The study's specific focus is whether the educational program develops commitments among campus-students and inmate-students and is supportive of their transition into the role of paraprofessional social workers. The results of this study support correctional education programs in social work and suggest that there may be rehabilitative elements for inmates who participate in social work training. 3 tables, 40 references.
