Child safety programs include specialized police units, "McGruff" crime fighter programs, gun safety, and child watch. City task forces in West New York, New Jersey; Lincoln, Nebraska; Houston; Syracuse, New York; and Buffalo focus on illegal drugs and youth problems. The report describes commercial crime initiatives on shoplifting and bank robbery prevention, business and residential security, and trespassing prevention. Community and police crime prevention programs include neighborhood watch, Seniors Against Crime, police-citizen committees, anti-vandalism units, and auto theft investigation units. Drug awareness programs, drug law enforcement tactics, drug forfeiture programs, and drunk and impaired driving programs have been instituted in many communities. The directory also lists intervention programs for at-risk youth, police management initiatives, police cadet/intern programs, repeat offender programs, juvenile repeat offenders, school counseling programs, senior citizen programs, truancy programs, victim assistance programs, programs for volunteers, police community relations initiatives, and improvements in police service.
