As of March 1, the actual number of prisoners in custody was 11,894, including 1,990 prisoners on remand. In New South Wales, 484 males and 25 females were in periodic detention centers on the first Sunday of March, and these figures are not included in the preceding statistics. An increase of 91 prisoners in the daily average for New South Wales during March contrasted with the relative stability of prison populations in other jurisdictions. Queensland prisons experienced a large increase in sentenced receptions, about equally shared between fine defaulters and others. In most jurisdictions, including Victoria and Queensland, remand rates continued at record levels. The number of prisoners on work release programs totaled 107 in New South Wales, 14 in Queensland, and 1 in South Australia.
