This videotape and booklet provide educators with information on teaching techniques and the contents of a three-part curriculum designed to teach elementary school children how to protect themselves against specific acts of abuse and to deal with the trauma suffered if abuse occurs.
Abstract
The tape is part of a series of four tapes that teaches 14 prevention concepts. It presents the curriculum and explains the teaching methods recommended for each grade level; the other tapes present the contents for each age group. The kindergarten component establishes the two concepts that are basic to child abuse prevention: self-esteem and communication. The curriculum for grades 1 through 3 reviews these 2 basic concepts and adds the following 10 additional concepts: valuing feelings, children's rights, appropriate touch, privacy and private parts of the body, refusal skills, getting away, telling someone, good and bad secrets, bribery, and fault. The curriculum in grades four through six expands on the previous concepts and adds the concepts that each person must care for himself or herself and that child abuse and neglect can include physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, physical neglect, and emotional neglect.
